Hi Michael,
I just stumbled upon your blog by chance and find it very informative and well written. Thanks!
I am a resident of Pleasanton for the last 10+ years. Also a vegetarian (along with the rest of my family). And, although Indian by origin, always interested in different cuisines, vegetarian varieties of which are unfortunately hard to come by in the area.
So I was going to request you to make a note of whether the places you review have a special place in their hearts for vegetarians :)
I plan on visiting frequently. Thanks again and keep up the good work

I read your blog for the first time while trying to find customer feedback about Jiou Yuan. There's nothing on yelp yet, and no web site. You seem to have the same tastes that I do, so hubby and I took your advice and gave it a try Friday evening. The decor, music, atmosphere and staff were great so we were hopeful...... then the food came.. We found it typical boring watered-down chinese(yawn)! The crab puffs were really good, but the mu shu pork, house chow mein and honey walnut prawns were mediocre, at best. We tried the hose special mango beef and were terribly dissapointed! I think it was $12.00 for a saucy pile of cheap cut tenderized beef mixed with random slices of mango. The flavor is hard to describe cuz the sweet sauce overpowered the rest! Anyway, I just wanted to give you some feedback.. If you've never tried Hung's on Bollinger in S.R., I recommend you do! Honey walnut prawns to die for! I only wish they were a bit closer! :(

I have been in this restaurant pretty often from its open, for dinners and dim sum, with my wife, friend and business associates just because my house and company are close-by. Our first time there, the waiter made a mistake over charging 20% on a $150 dinner for two. It was a sign that the service is not very professional.
The food is fair but not for the price and surely not any better than other Chinese restaurants in Bay Area. The service is definitely lousy. Just today, we spent $54 for dim sum but it was hardly enjoyable, The tea was cold and the waiter was insuting and hateful for no reason at all, not mentioning a long wait after 2pm. We will not in Koi for a long time.

Thanks - hadn't known about Pacific Gourmet & Market, thought they were just on vacation. Too bad, but I guess the demographics were just not there. I think that sort of ethnic market and takeout requires a critical mass of local residents with that cultural background, which we just don't have. (On the other hand, an upscale Filipino restaurant might have worked better, since people will venture out for unfamiliar ethnic food but might not have a need for the groceries from "home".)
